Shorts are served up to 1080x1920. Above 360p, YouTube splits video and audio into separate streams, so we merge them before handing you the file. That merge takes about a tenth of a second and is why our files are never silent.
Because 360p is the only format YouTube serves with video and audio already combined. Every higher resolution has to be merged with a separate audio stream using ffmpeg, and ad-funded sites skip that step to save CPU. We do not.
